How to back up your Raspberry Pi

Copy your SD card in ten minutes so you never lose a project.

The hands-on steps can be quick, but copying and checking a large card may take longer than ten minutes.

Separate system and content

Keep track of the operating-system image, configuration changes and your own files. A fresh installation can replace system software, but it cannot recreate personal documents or undocumented settings.

Keep a second copy

Copy important files to a separate device and label the backup with a date. Do not keep your only backup on the same microSD card. For a whole-card image, use a suitable tool and check that the destination has enough room.

Verify restoration

Open several backed-up files and test a spare card where practical. Confirm that the restored system starts and that the project works without services you forgot to record. A successful copy operation alone is not a complete recovery test.

Use a simple routine

Back up before major upgrades, keep a short setup note and shut down cleanly. Store at least one copy disconnected from the running system. Choose a routine you will repeat rather than a complicated plan that never gets used.
