Does portable solar work in the UK?
Honest numbers for a British summer and winter.
Match the input
Before connecting a panel, compare its voltage and current with the power station’s permitted input range. Check connector type and polarity as well. A connector that fits is not evidence that the electrical ratings are compatible.
Expect changing output
Cloud, shade, season, angle and temperature affect solar generation. A panel rated at 200W will not provide 200W continuously throughout a typical day. Plan around a range and observe the power station’s actual input reading.
Summer and winter energy
For illustration, an average 100W input over three hours gives 300Wh, while an average 30W over two hours gives 60Wh, before further losses. These are worked examples, not measured summer or winter figures. Winter daylight is shorter and the sun is lower, so take readings in your own location before planning a trip around solar charging.
Prepare another option
Check the manufacturer’s instructions for placement, storage and weather exposure. Keep mains charging available when possible and protect the equipment as instructed. Try the full setup before relying on it during a power cut.
