USB-C charging: choose the right cable and port

Why some USB-C cables charge slowly, and how to pick a fast one.

Identify both ends

USB-A to USB-C and USB-C to USB-C leads connect different types of ports. Check the charger and the device before buying. An adapter can change the connector without adding the charging capability you need.

Check charging support

USB-C names a connector system; it does not by itself promise a particular charging rate. Fast charging depends on compatible capabilities across charger, cable and device. Look at their specifications together.

Read cable ratings

A lead advertised as 3.1A is not automatically a 45W USB-C Power Delivery lead. A USB-A connection does not provide the USB-C Power Delivery path used by modern USB-C PD chargers. Data-transfer performance is another separate specification.

Keep a tested spare

Use a suitable undamaged cable and inspect its connectors. Longer leads can be convenient, but a reliable connection matters more than length. Label a lead that works with your intended setup so you can find it quickly.
